As a Latina in the non-profit workspace, you face unique challenges. Follow these tips to help you on your pathway to success, and don’t forget to check out how SHENIX® can help you grow as a Latina in your field.

1.     Build a Strong Network

Building a strong network is essential when working in non-profits, just like in other fields of business. Connecting with other professionals within your and adjacent fields will allow you countless mentorship opportunities. When you know you have like-minded people on your side, you will have a sense of support and confidence in your work. Additionally, a strong network offers you and your non-profit more funding, volunteer, and education opportunities. You will never regret making connections, whether it is in your community, with local businesses, at networking events, or through professional organizations. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet people!

2.     Invest Time in Education

When people think of investing in education, they usually assume that it will cost money. Many times, however, the monetary cost can be minimal–the time investment is even more valuable. Since non-profits often require specialized skills and knowledge, it’s important for you to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices in your field. This can be done through networking events, professional development courses, or simply listening to podcasts, reading books, and following experts on social media. Developing a growing knowledge base will position you to excel in your non-profit role!

3.     Advocate for Yourself

Women and people of color face unique challenges in any field of work, and non-profits are no exception. It is important for you to speak up for yourself to ensure your contributions are recognized and valued. This may include negotiating for a fair salary or adequate time off, asking for promotions and leadership opportunities, and calling it out when you feel marginalized and overlooked. This is another reason that a strong, supportive network is so important. These people can both advocate for you, as well as encourage you to be an advocate for yourself.

4.     Embrace Your Identity

Embracing your Latina identity can be a powerful tool for success in your non-profit. Don’t be afraid to leverage your unique perspective and experiences to stand out and make a meaningful impact. Have the courage to share your cultural traditions and identity, advocate for inclusion and diversity, and bring your Latina perspective into your non-profit. This will strengthen the organization overall and make it more accessible to other Latinas and minorities in your community and your field of work.

5.     Practice Self Care to Prevent Burnout

Working in non-profits can be powerful, meaningful work. It can also be stressful. It’s important to proactively practice self-care before the emotionally taxing and demanding work begins to take a toll on your mental and physical health. Self-care can take many forms and will look different for different people, but the basics tend to be the same: take breaks when needed, schedule time away from your work tasks, and practice setting boundaries. When you put these into practice, you’ll have time to participate in the activities that allow you to de-stress and stay mentally and physically healthy.
